Holography, known as stereoscopic imaging, is an optical technology that enables the naked eye to see three-dimensional imaginary images. In 1971, Dennis Gabor was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for its development. In the field of art, artists began to take notice of holography in the 1960s, and a new genre of art was born.

Large-scale exhibitions in Japan began in the late 1970s, and Setsuko Ishii (1946- ) was one of the first artists to use this technology. Always active at the forefront of the field, she is highly regarded as one of the world's leading holography artists. This exhibition introduces the appeal of holographic art through the largest retrospective of Ishii's work to date. It presents a beautiful, fantastical space where art and science are fused together by vivid, freely spinning trails of light and three-dimensional images.
