Picture books (illustrated books) became widely read in Japan during the Edo period (1603-1868) when printing technology advanced and printed books began to be distributed. This exhibition introduces the history and expansion of picture books from the Edo period to the present day, based on the Chihiro Art Museum collection. From traditional picture scrolls to the popular publication of "kusa-soshi" (picture books on paperback) in the Edo period, to the picture magazines for children that spread after the Meiji period, to picture books during the war, to picture books that are still being read today - these are just a few of the many picture books that have been produced in Japan over the past 400 years.
