Launched in 2000, Spiral Independent Creators Festival (SICF) is an open-call art festival that aspires to discover, foster, and support emerging artists and designers. We will hold the solo show of the winner of the 22 Spiral Independent Creators Festival Exhibition Grand Prize in Spiral Garden (Spiral 1F).
Using natural pigments, Japanese ink, and Japanese paper, the works of Ching Wen Chang explore, through the depiction of landscapes representing apartments and windows, the feelings of solitude and anxiety, individuals are confronted with, in big cities.
In this exhibition, she will present three large pieces, including two new works, and small works depicting Taiwan and Tokyo housing complexes. While remembering her native Taiwan, the artist will explore her own feeling of solitude, living abroad on her own, being kept far from her family and loved ones since the pandemic, a feeling so personal and yet universal.
For her first solo show at Spiral, Chang will also present a small piece with the windows of the Esplanade staircase as a motif, interacting with the venue's architectural concept that has remained unchanged since its opening.
