Artists

Tomoto Kobori
Tomoto Kobori (1864-1931) was born in Konaka-mura, Aso-gun, Shimono-kuni (now Konaka-cho in Sano City). He trained as a historical painter based on his study of the occult and established himself as a leading figure in "historical painting," the most important genre of painting at the time.

In addition to teaching at the Tokyo Fine Arts School, Kobori also contributed to the research and development of historical painting by forming the "Historical Genre Painting Society" and studying weapons and armor. He also nurtured younger artists who specialized in historical paintings, such as Yukihiko Yasuda and Mitsushi Haneishi.

This exhibition will present an overview of Tomoto Kobori, a major figure in modern historical painting, with a focus on work recently acquired by the museum.
