Sokyo gallery presents Eric Serritella's "Shared Spaces." Serritella's ceramics are captivating both for their materiality and the messages they convey. In this exhibition, his first solo show in Japan, Serritella will show a total of nine ceramic works created between 2014 and 2021.
Guided by the development of Asian tea culture and its influence on ceramics, Serritella incorporates the philosophy of wabi sabi, popularized by the tea master Sen no Rikyu in the late 1500s. Serritella tries to express how nature has persisted in maintaining its splendor and survival in spite of human apathy, juxtaposing the nature of the ceramic material with the fragility and durability of the natural environment.
Anthropomorphism is also an inseparable part of Serritella's work. Metaphors are embedded in each of the organic textures, and the humanized elements, through their interaction and relationship with the natural environment, express a timeless and inseparable humanity. The intention is to raise the awareness of viewers about the environment and to influence their behavior, as well.
Seritella's work has been exhibited over 130 times in the United States and abroad, and is in the collections of many museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and the Carnegie Museum of Art. This exhibition is an opportunity to experience the artist's view of nature and philosophy from the surrealistic forms created by his hand.
