Gerhard Richter (1932-) is a master of contemporary art born in Germany. Richter has engaged in a truly diverse range of production activities, including figurative and abstract paintings, photographs (and drawings on them), works using glass and mirrors, and video works.

This exhibition is a long-awaited large-scale solo exhibition in Japan of Richter, who has remained at the forefront of the international art scene since his full-fledged activities began in the 1960s, and whose position in the field is unshakable. The exhibition will introduce Richter's 60-year career, focusing on the works he has carefully kept with him until 2022 when he will turn 90 years old.

Located near the Imperial Palace, the National Museum of Modern Art is Japan’s oldest national art museum. Its greatest feature is its collection, one of the largest in Japan, with over 13,000 pieces, including important cultural properties such as work by Taikan Yokoyama and Ryusei Kishida. The "MOMAT Collection," an exhibition of about 200 works selected for each period from domestic and foreign masterpieces from the Meiji era to the present day, is the only exhibition of its kind in Japan where visitors can experience over 100 years of Japanese art history at once.

Several times a year, special exhibitions are held to introduce domestic and foreign artworks based on various themes, and the view from the "Room with a View" observation lounge is also not to be missed.
