Harumi Kuga
Harumi Kuga's exhibition "Tamayura" will be on view at IG Photo Gallery beginning September 6, 2022.

Harumi Kuga is exhibiting for the first time as a solo artist. Kuga graduated from Kyoto University of Art in March 2022 with a BA in Photography from the Department of Art, Faculty of Art and Design, Kyoto University of Art and Design. It was the artist's graduation project that gave rise to the works in the exhibition. Kuga uses a small digital camera to photograph cities, creating black and white images.

"Tamayura" is an ancient Japanese word meaning "a short moment in time" or "fleeting moment." It is a word coined by people who have sensed the length and shortness of the flow of time since ancient times. Even before photography existed, people must have been conscious of the moment and felt something in that short time. In this title, Kuga may be reminding us of the "moment" that existed before photography was invented.

When it comes to the world and time, how do we perceive them? What are the characteristics of photography that are closely connected to the notion of the moment? These perceptions are fundamentally challenged by Kuga's work.
