Artists

Ikuo Hirayama
Ikuo Hirayama (1930-2009) traveled the Silk Road more than a hundred times in search of the path of Buddhism eastward (Tozen) and the source of Japanese culture. The camel caravan depicted by Hirayama is a symbol of peaceful trade, as well as a carrier of culture and religion, and a prayer for peace. On the other hand, having witnessed the destruction of historical heritage due to warfare and other causes, Hirayama continued to work for the preservation of cultural properties throughout his life.

This exhibition introduces the Silk Road world that Ikuo Hirayama depicted as his life's work through prints produced by his studio. Watercolor paintings created during Matsuo Basho's journey along the "Oku no Hosomichi" will also be introduced along with Basho's haiku.
