Itaru Hirama is a photographer who has photographed many artists, including for Tower Records' "No Music, No Life" campaign, and is recognized as having introduced a new style to the world of photography with his "dynamic portraits that make you feel like you can hear the music."
Hirama was born in a photo studio opened by his grandfather in Shiogama City, Miyagi Prefecture. Influenced by his grandfather and father, who were classical music lovers, Hirama was familiar with music from an early age, and the first live orchestra performance he heard as an elementary school student was a powerful original experience for him. He was baptized in punk rock in his teens, and as a photographer, music that transcended genres was always playing in the background, creating his own unique worldview.
This exhibition invites visitors to the world of "photography and music" with about 180 carefully selected works, including "Motor Drive", which made Itaru Hirama's name known to the world, a vast number of portraits of artists taken up to now, a series of works following Min Tanaka's "Place Dance", a series of works expressing introspective mental landscapes "Spectacle", and photographs taken at Hirama Photo Studio Tokyo, which opened in 2015.
