Artists

Joan Miró
Along with Picasso and Dali, Barcelona-born artist Joan Miró (1893-1983) is one of Spain's leading contemporary artists who have been long loved in Japan. However, it is not well known that behind his creative activities, which range from painting, sculpture, prints, tapestries, and ceramics, was a deep knowledge of Japanese culture. This exhibition traces Miro's 90-year career, from his early masterpieces, in which we can see his admiration for Japan through ukiyo-e and haiku poetry, to his large postwar works that reflect the unique Japanese sense he came into contact with through folk art, calligraphy, and pottery. This is the first large-scale retrospective of Miró's exhibition in Japan in 20 years, featuring approximately 140 works and documents, including Japanese folk art that he displayed in his studio and collaboration work with Shuzo Takiguchi, a poet and art critic who published the world's first book on Miró.
