Johannes Vermeer, Jacob van Ruisdael, Rembrandt van Rijn, Gabriel Metsu et al.
Johannes Vermeer is one of the most famous Dutch painters of the 17th century. He is loved all over the world for his realistic and meticulous spatial composition and beautiful expression of light and shadow.
This exhibition introduces Vermeer's early masterpiece, "Woman Reading a Letter at a Window," which is known for its limited production, in Japan. The fact that the background of this work contains a painting of Cupid was discovered in a 1979 survey, but for a long time it was thought that Vermeer himself had painted over it. However, a restoration project started in 2017 by a team of experts revealed that the overpainting was done by someone after Vermeer's death, and the painting will be restored to the way Vermeer painted it.
After the completion of the restoration, the work will be exhibited at the National Gallery of Classical Paintings in Dresden, the museum that owns it, from September 2021, before being shown in Japan for the first time in the world. Hokkaido will be the second venue in Japan after Tokyo.
This exhibition focuses on the precious collection of the Elector of Saxony, which led to the acquisition of this masterpiece by the National Gallery of Classical Paintings in Dresden, as well as other masterpieces from the golden age of Dutch painting in the 17th century, including works by Rembrandt van Rijn, Gabriel Metz, and Jacob van Rijndael, who were active in the same period as Vermeer. The exhibition will also include approximately 70 masterpieces from the golden age of Dutch painting in the 17th century, including works by Rembrandt van Rijn, Gabriel Metu, and Jacob van Rijsdal.
