SAI presents ‘Commercial Break’, a solo exhibition by Joshua Vides, a visual artist known for his eye-catching artworks and collaborations with a wide range of well-known fashion brands and companies. Taking place from Friday 29th April to Sunday 15th May 2022, the exhibition will feature new artworks as well as fashion items from his own brand and exclusive collaborations.

As the founder of the streetwear brand CLSC, California-based artist, Joshua Vides, was already a well-known figure in the US street culture scene. However, it was thanks to the customized NIKE AIRFORCE 1 shoes that he painted and shared on social media, that he gained global recognition.
These images attracted the attention of many artists and celebrities, leading to him creating artworks for figures such as NBA legend, LeBron James, and world-renowned contemporary artist, Takashi Murakami, as well as collaborations with fashion labels such as Supreme and O-White. In the past few years, Vides has balanced creating his own unique artworks, installations, and products with collaborations with international brands including Fendi, BMW, Ballantine's, New Balance, Converse, and Uniqlo, reflecting a range of diversity in his artistic creations.

Vides’ use of existing objects as canvases on which to create his artworks has enabled him to create a captivating style that is instantly memorable. The origins of this style can be found in the cartoons, comic books, and various media familiar to him since childhood, with these references continuing to influence his work to this day. With their similar point of reference, it is possible to sense a familiarity and anity with the work of pioneering artists such as Keith Haring, Roy Lichtenstein, and Sol LeWitt, all of whom have contributed to the advancement of contemporary art and culture.

The colorful works on display in ‘Commercial Break’ mark a decided shift in Vides’ style, most notably his previous black and white series, ‘Reality to Idea’, in which he used black markers on white backgrounds to create his works. ‘Commercial Break’ is an entirely new body of work that demonstrates a personal evolution for the artist and a new interpretation of Pop Art. In recent years, Vides has been working as a commercial artist and has focused his eorts on making collaborative works with a variety of media.
For the first time as a visual artist, he has been able to create a series of works that are a conscious ‘break’ from his previous output, functioning as both a literal and metaphorical intermission between projects, that he likens to a commercial sandwiched between TV programs. The works in the exhibition present a perspective that is full of evocative storylines and vivid imagery, and a pure perspective that reflects Vides’ ideas as a visual artist more than ever.

The exhibition will be the artist’s largest solo exhibition in Japan to date and will present entirely new canvas works and mounted sculptures. In addition to limited edition silkscreens and sculptures, the exhibition’s original line of merchandise includes T-Shirts, rugs, and skateboard decks. For this exhibition, Vides has collaborated with leading Japanese streetwear brand WTAPS® on an exclusive merchandise item. As a coffee enthusiast, Vides will also be sharing his expert knowledge with Kith Treats in Miyashita Park, who will be serving original flavored ice creams, using coffee beans sourced by the artist himself, and presented in a special collaboration cup. Please come and visit the unique world of Joshua Vides, a leading icon of contemporary street culture.
