Kana Kondo
Instituto Cervantes Tokyo presents Kana Kondo’s photographs of the "Camino Francés" pilgrim route walked in 2018, 2019, and 2021. Santiago de Compostela in northwestern Spain is considered one of the three holiest Christian sites, along with the Vatican in Italy and Jerusalem in Israel. In the early 9th century, a shepherd was guided by a star to discover a cave containing the remains of James, a disciple of Jesus Christ, and a cathedral was built at the site. Christians from royalty and nobility to commoners began to visit the city in droves, and in the 12th century it reached its peak. The pilgrimage to Santiago then experienced a downturn, but it came back into the limelight at the end of the 20th century with pilgrims from all over the world making the journey. It is now open to all people regardless of religion. Kondo remarks: "Pilgrims continue the walk to this holy place with their own thoughts and feelings, and on the pilgrimage route, where they repeatedly meet and part, they face their own lives and are purified. The power of the 'path' that people have been walking since ancient times may be at work in this process." The exhibition title "Ultreia" is of Latin origin and means "go beyond," "go forward with courage," or "aim high." It is used to encourage pilgrims on their way to the holy city of Santiago de Compostela.
