This exhibition is by Ms. Kayako Nishimaki, who made her debut as a picture book author in 1967 with "The Land of Buttons" and has been active for more than 50 years. After graduating from Tokyo University of the Arts, Nishimaki started "Children's Atelier" in a rented room of a kindergarten while making prints. Inspired by the wonderful pictures of the children who attended the studio, which freely and spontaneously expressed what was in their hearts, she ventured into the world of picture books. About the creation of the picture book, she said, "I wanted to create a book in which the pictures could be enjoyed. When I heard that "children borrow books that are not always available in libraries, I felt happy to have painted them."
This exhibition is a partial update of the exhibition held in May 2021, which was curtailed due to COVID-19. The exhibition features approximately 70 works drawn using a variety of techniques, including "Watashi no One Piece," as well as her latest work, "Iedete wo Shitateru Terubozu," to be published in 2019, and original drawings for the picture book "Bokutachi Ichiban Sukina Mono" created using embroidery and appliqué.
There will also be a photo spot where visitors can enter a scene from the picture book.
