Towada Art Center will hold a solo exhibition for sculptor Kohei Nawa, who has exhibited "PixCell-Deer#52" at the museum as a commissioned work since 2021. This will be Nawa's first solo exhibition at a Japanese museum in 10 years, as he has been exhibiting overseas more and more in recent years. This exhibition will introduce Nawa's unique way of perceiving sculpture, centering on "PixCell-Deer#52" from his signature "PixCell" series, as well as through new works on view for the first time and also a group of recent works.
Based on his unique concept of perceiving the world in terms of “cells,” Nawa pursues a new way of producing sculpture by using various materials including glass and liquids. PixCell-Deer#52" is a taxidermied deer covered with transparent spheres (cells), but it is also a “video-like” work in which the surface of the deer, which has been fragmented and distorted by the lens-effect of the cells, appears to change as the viewer's perspective shifts. Other works include a fluid liquid that creates countless bubbles and a painting in which drops of viscous liquid form a sign-like pattern on the canvas. Visitors will be able to fully experience the world of Nawa's works.
