Landscapes of the Heart – Bunjinga and Nanga Paintings

Kumanokodo Nakahechi Museum of Art
Finished
During Japan’s Edo period (1603– 1867), the landscapes depicted in paintings imported from China were imagined scenes that emphasized the “xie-yi” style of freedom and expressiveness. Eventually, the "shakei zu" style of painting, which incorporated actual landscapes, came into vogue, and was passed down to later “Bunjinga” literati painters as a method of painting landscapes that could not be achieved by simply imitating their predecessors.

After the opening of Japan to the outside world and the Meiji Restoration (1868-1912), a variety of foreign cultures came into the country and landscape painting in the Bunjinga and Nanga (Southern School) styles were greatly influenced by Western painting. This exhibition focuses on the differences and similarities between the expression of landscapes in Bunjinga, which flourished during the Edo period, and Nanga paintings from the Meiji period onward.
