The backbone of the series, "Portrait," is the cultural experiences of the 80s and 90s, which Masayuki Yoshinari began to conceive around 2020.
The cultural experience of being born and raised in 1983 in a typical Japanese family of the Showa era is at the root of Yoshinari's creative vitality, and the regional and historical characteristics of Hiratsuka, Kanagawa, which was the center of his life, and Oiso, where Yoshinari currently has his studio, are the introduction to his work. The people portrayed have distinct personalities and quirks that fascinated Yoshinari, and he was able to capture the atmosphere of an era in Japan.
Yoshinari has also created works inspired by porcelain, skateboards, and ukiyoe prints, and his patterns and poses in Portrait are influenced by them. In the main visual, Yubitsume focuses on the spirit and certain behaviors that are unique to a certain class of Japanese people, and by understanding them, Yoshinari finds the uniqueness of expression as a Japanese artist.
