Women and nature have long been regarded as symbols of “the cycle of life" and "unconditional love.” Some people view this positively, while others equate it with the historical and societal domination of women and nature. Meanwhile, the concept of "material ecocriticism," coined by the environmental philosopher Serenella Iovino and the environmental humanist Serpil Oppermann in 2012, differs from traditional dichotomous worldviews such as women/men and nature/culture. As an alternative view of the world from the perspectives of culture and art, it proposes that "all components of the world, including women and nature, are agents that interact with each other." In support of this idea, this exhibition aims to share curator Reiko Itabashi's own recent question, "Why are there so many female artists who take nature as their subject in Japan?” The exhibition will feature the works of seven female artists who express the preciousness of nature through various genres and techniques, such as sculpture, installation, and bio-art.
