Yoshitomo Nara
This exhibition looks back on the history of three exhibitions by Yoshitomo Nara (1959-), a contemporary artist from Hirosaki, held in a brick warehouse before it became an art museum.
Internationally active as a contemporary artist, Nara moved to Germany in 1988 and returned to Japan in 2000 while actively engaged in activities overseas. The following year, his first full-scale solo exhibition in Japan, “I Don’t Mind, If You Forget Me." toured the country, and was held at the Brick Warehouse in 2002. This led to another exhibition of Nara's work at the Brick Warehouse in 2005 and 2006.

These exhibitions, known as "Yoshitomo Nara Exhibition Hirosaki," or "Narahiro," were realized through the efforts of many volunteers from the city and beyond, who were inspired by Nara's encounter with Chiyoko Yoshii, the president of Yoshii Sake Brewery, which owned the brick warehouse at the time. Many visitors came from all over Japan, bringing new energy to the city. This was a great opportunity for the citizens of Hirosaki to become aware of the possibility of establishing a new art center in a city that had never had an art museum, and it led to a concrete movement to transform the brick warehouse into the current "Hirosaki Brick Warehouse Museum of Art.

This year, 20 years after the first exhibition of Yoshitomo Nara at the Brick Warehouse, this event will once again shine a light on this "Narahiro," which has an important meaning in the relationship between the Brick Warehouse and the community. The exhibition will look back on the three exhibitions through various materials such as printed matter, goods, and video recordings from the time, and trace the thoughts and feelings of those who were involved. Photographs by Masako Nagano and Yoko Hosokawa, who photographed the preparations for the exhibitions and exhibition scenes at the time, will be on display, as well as paintings by Yoshitomo Nara that have been exhibited in the past.

Through the exhibition of materials and artworks, and the practice of research from various angles, the aim is to create a space for thinking about multiple questions surrounding local art projects, art museums, and the people involved in them, using the case of "Narahiro" in Hirosaki as a starting point. The aim of this project is to create a space for thinking about these questions.
