National Museum of Ethnology Collection – Beads in the World

Ishikawa Nanao Art Museum
Finished
Since they were first created some 120,000 years ago, beads have been used to express people's desire for beauty, to pray, and to show relationships. The materials used to make beads include stones, plants, shells, glass, animal teeth, insect wings, and more. This exhibition introduces fascinating beads from around the world. It also features approximately 200 works by Tohaku Hasegawa, a painter active in the Momoyama period (1573-1600) from the city of Nanao on Ishikawa Prefecture’s Noto Peninsula. Displays include reproductions of Buddhist paintings depicting beaded ornaments and materials excavated from archaeological sites in Noto.
