Nihonga Painter Fumiko Hori: A Hundred-Year Journey

Akita Museum of Modern Art
Finished

Artists

Fumiko Hori
The Japanese-style Nihonga painter Fumiko Hori (1918–2019) looked at the brightness of life and “expressed herself as she was.” For much of the 20th century, Hori continued to paint without the restrictions of the art world, and her work continues to inspire many people even today.

This exhibition will feature Hori's works from the "New Artists Society" exhibition, to which she was accepted for the first time at the age of 21, the "Creative Art" exhibition held after WWII, and the "New Creation Society" and "Soga-kai" exhibitions that followed, as well as numerous solo exhibitions she held until she turned 100 years old. It will also introduce the works of Yasuko Shibata (1907–1946) and Toyoshiro Fukuda (1904–1970), two Nihonga painters from Akita Prefecture who were instrumental in establishing Hori's painting style.
