Norman Rockwell
Ceramic figurines, ornaments, and dolls known as "Seto novelties" were loved by people overseas. first produced in Italy in the 15th century and Germany in the 18th century, ceramic figurines were created in postwar Japan as exports from Seto City in Aichi Prefecture to the United States and other countries. Novelty ceramics featuring the works of Norman Rockwell, a popular illustrator who depicted “the good old days” in the United States, played a key part in the story of Seto novelties. Seto craftsmen used prototypes and casting techniques to create three-dimensional finishes with compositions that two-dimensional illustrations could not convey. Dolls were painted to express joy, anger, sorrow, and other emotions. Seto novelties thus took on the work of popular painters, and their elaborate, high-quality workmanship led to a period of prosperity for the company. In this exhibition, visitors can enjoy the excellence of Seto ceramics and heartwarming scenes of American life through Norman Rockwell novelties.
