The third volume of the "Okayama: Masterpieces of Religious Art" series focuses on Jodo art in Okayama Prefecture from among the artworks deposited by temples, shrines, and individuals in Okayama Prefecture, focusing on three keywords: Honen Shonin, Hell, and Paradise, and Kumano Bioni.

Honen Shonin (1133-1212), the founder of the Jodo sect, was born in Kume, Mimasaka Province (present-day Kume County, Okayama), and was a high priest revered as the lifelong teacher of Shinran Shonin. The exhibition focuses on the life of Honen Shonin, who laid the foundation of Pure Land Buddhism in Japan, with a focus on the picture scroll "Honen Shonin Denpo E" (Kamakura Period, Okayama Prefectural Museum), which depicts the life of Honen Shonin.

Next, we will introduce excellent paintings on the theme of hell and paradise from Okayama Prefecture, such as "Jyuubun Amida 25 Bosatsu Raigo-zu" (Kamakura period, Henmei-in Temple, Setouchi City) and "Jizo Jyuouzu" (Muromachi period, Hofuku-ji Temple, Soja City).

In addition, Shimogasaoka (now Setouchi City) in the former Oku County was one of the bases of Kumano Bioni, religious figures who traveled around the country during the Edo period, illustrating paintings such as "Kumano Kenshin Jukai Mandala". This exhibition displays a group of valuable materials inherited by the descendants of Kumano Bioni that tell the story of their activities.
