The theme of this project, which invites artists who have participated in past Fujisawa Art Space projects to develop a work-in-progress (i.e., a form of artwork that is not a finished product, but a form of artwork in which the process of creation is also shared), is "Opera".
Fujisawa has one of the oldest "citizen's operas". Its history dates back to its first performance in 1973, and up to the present day, 24 performances have been given. Opera is already considered to have an inherent form, such as a song with classical music, but originally, as it is called a comprehensive art form, it is a highly flexible field of expression with various expressive elements such as music, art, and theater.
This time, artists with diverse ideas and techniques will participate in order to consider a new "citizen's opera" for Fujisawa. Seika Osaki (poetry), Terumi Goto (painting), Cobird (collage works), Atsuko Nakamura (sculpture, butoh), Teppei Yamada (media art, installation), and Shonan Institute of Technology have come together to conceive an unconventional opera. The exhibit includes drawings of the process of creating the opera stage, a model of the stage set, video and music of a prototype butoh dance, and a poem that will be the main axis of the story. A story inspired by the legend of Enoshima, etc. was also created.
During the exhibition period, visitors to the art space will see the daily development of the artists' acrobatic conception of opera. The situation may be likened to a circus. The word "circus" means "circle" in Latin.
