Park Seo-Bo
Park Seo-Bo was born in 1931 in North Gyeongsang, South Korea. He developed a style that utilizes monochrome lines and the texture of hanji paper. He is a pioneer of Korean contemporary art and a representative of Dansaekhwa (monochromatic painting). He participated in the seminal exhibition "Five Hinsek (White): Five Korean Artists" (Tokyo Gallery, 1975). He has since had a total of six solo exhibitions at Tokyo Gallery. In this show, 17 works will be exhibited: 15 from the "Late Drawing Method" series, plus two drawings.

Park's "Drawing Method" series can be divided into three distinct styles: the "Early Drawing Method," which began in the late 1960s with pencil line drawings; the "Middle Drawing Method" of the 1980s and 1990s, when he began using hanji paper; and the "Late Drawing Method," which began in 2000. The works of his "Late Drawing Method" (also called his "Color Drawing Method") series shown in this exhibition are characterized by the repetition of vertical lines on water-soaked hanji paper with a three-dimensional effect and vivid color surfaces.

The "Late Drawing Method" was inspired by a visit to Mt. Bandai (Fukushima Prefecture) during a visit to Japan for a solo exhibition in the fall of 2000. The view of the autumn leaves from the top of the mountain changed their expressions at every moment depending on the direction of the wind, "like an onrushing fire," according to the artist. Fascinated by the colors of nature, Park started the "Late Painting Method.” The monochrome color surfaces suggest assimilation with nature and convey a message of comfort and labor that transcends the changing times.
