Retrospective François Pompon

Sakura City Museum of Art
Finished

Artists

François Pompon, Shinobu Tsuda
François Pompon (1855-1933) was a sculptor active in France from the end of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century. After gaining experience as a draftsman in Rodin's studio, Pompon became an animal sculptor at the age of 51, producing such works as "Polar Bear," "Owl," and "Pelican" with their simple shapes and smooth surfaces.

This exhibition, the first retrospective of his work in Japan, will feature approximately 90 sculptures and sketches from the Musée de Dijon in the former Burgundy region, the Musée du Pont de Beaulieu in his birthplace, and the Tatebayashi Museum of Art in Gunma Prefecture, which has a large collection of Pompon's sculptures and materials in Japan. In addition, the museum will introduce the collection of Shinobu Tsuda (1875-1946), a metalworker from Sakura who was influenced by Pompon.
