Ryo Tomie was born in 1991 and completed his graduate studies in oil painting at Tama Art University in 2016. He spent his childhood in France and Japan. While he has respect for the Western art she learned from her childhood, he is uncomfortable with the difference between the use of Western oil painting techniques and his own roots as an Asian.
Tomie continues to work on the theme of "crossing the border" in order to uniquely stylize his "twisted identity itself" between the West and Asia. His diverse expressions, such as colorful thick oil paintings, urethane foam objects painted with oil paints, performances, and video works, resonate with each other and have acquired a unique worldview.
In this exhibition, the artist attempts to leap from the personal to the universal by reconstructing (≒arranging) the personal history of the artist, including his upbringing, daily life, and life's sorrows and joys, as if he were arranging flowers. The paintings and objects created from this process present the aspect of a "paradise" that may (or may not) exist somewhere else. Through this exhibition, the artist presents viewers with vivid images of this world filled with casual activities and the possibility of paradise.
