Ryukyu: Special Exhibition Commemorating the 50th Anniversary of Okinawa’s Reversion to Japan

Tokyo National Museum
Finished
In 2022, Okinawa Prefecture will mark the 50th anniversary of its reversion to Japan. Okinawa, which boasts a unique history and culture as the former Kingdom of Ryukyu, has faced the struggles of modernization and war and continues to pass on its history and culture to the future. This exhibition is a comprehensive look at the establishment of the Ryukyu Kingdom in Asia and the legacy of its unique culture.

The Tokyo National Museum houses one of the largest collections of Ryukyuan cultural assets in Japan, consisting of items purchased from Okinawa during the Meiji period (1868-1912) and items later donated. In 1992, on the 20th anniversary of Okinawa's reversion to Japan, the museum held the special exhibition "The Way of the Sea" based on research activities related to the history and culture of Ryukyu. With these foundations, the history and culture of the Ryukyu Islands, which continue to shine powerfully, will be exhibited in the largest-scale exhibition yet.
