Painter Seiryo Ikawa has been working energetically in Nagasaki for about 40 years since he was appointed to Nagasaki University in 1984. His painting practice is based on a tireless pursuit of painting itself, or in other words, the act of painting itself.
Since his youth, when he studied under Kaoru Yamaguchi and then Gyoji Nomiyama at the oil painting department of Tokyo University of Art, Ikawa has been strongly interested in the structural aspect of painting. Later, when he studied in Marseille, he began to establish his own style of production based on this interest. Since then, until the present day, he has been working to deconstruct existing concepts of painting by questioning the relationship between "ground" and "figure" in his paintings, as well as the verticality and horizontality of the rectangular screen, and by exploring the possibilities of supports such as canvas and paper. The arrangement and overlapping of color surfaces, which give the paintings a rich rhythm, are also important elements that characterize the world of paintings that Ikawa has created.
This exhibition introduces the flow of his painting career from his early days to the present and also features an installation by the artist himself.
