The Japan Art Institute (Nihon Bijutsuin) was founded by Tenshin Okakura in 1898. After being expelled from Japan’s top art school, Okakura went on to train the standard-bearers of modern Japanese painting, including Kogyo Terasaki, Taikan Yokoyama, and Shunso Hishida, instilling them with the ideal of creating a form of Japanese painting suitable for the new era. These artists eventually studied Western perspective and shading, and they sought to revolutionize Japanese painting through a technique derisively called "the fuzzy style.” After Okakura’s death, the Japan Art Institute was re-established with a new generation of painters including Shiko Imamura, Seison Maeda, and Gyoshu Hayami, who developed their own styles through a struggle between tradition and innovation.

This exhibition features 48 works by 21 artists who belonged to the Japan Art Institute from the collection of the Yokohama Museum of Art, which is currently closed for renovations. Enjoy the brilliance that this organization brought to the world of modern Japanese painting.
