"Hot Spring Aroma” is a large, ambitious painting of five women bathing representative of the artist Shinsui Ito’s work. Created when Ito was 30 years old, this painting went missing for a long time but was recently rediscovered and is now in the possession of the museum. The women are depicted amid a delicately rendered natural world seen through rising steam. This retrospective observing the 50th anniversary of Ito’s death reveals the charm of his work, as seen in “Hot Spring Aroma” and other outstanding paintings from throughout his career, plus large sketches and other works.
