Subversives Bodies is an exhibition that sets out to survey some of the contemporary art practices which question our understanding of the corporeal in relation to the factors of gender, identity, and sexuality. By “the corporeal”, we are referring to the multiple and ever-changing understandings of the body, how we define its frontiers, and also the politics that allow bodies to access varying levels of agency, autonomy, and mobility when situated from/in different contexts. The main emphasis of this exhibition is placed on the artistic uses of media, particularly analog and digital media such as graphic, photography, and video, as a means to expand the possibilities of the body by framing, reframing, and re-contextualizing its “presence” in new and exciting arenas of action or visibility. Hoping to create a vitrine for art practitioners that are producing outside of mainstream metropolitan circles of the Global North―as well as responding to the plurality of cultures and interests that constitute our curatorial collective ― we have collaborated with artists from Chile, Ghana, and Japan developing this curatorial project, looking to foster connections amongst regions of the world that share more than expected in regards to the challenges but also the creative strategies surrounding the body and it’s representation. In this regard, the selected artist’s production can be read from varying perspectives including desire, emancipation, feminism, gender, identity, nudity, and sexuality, and yet are not limited to the confines of these same terms.
