The Essence of Kogei Education - Design Thought with Kanjiro Noutomi

Ishikawa Prefectural Museum of History
Finished
Kanazawa Institute of Technology (the predecessor of Ishikawa Prefectural Technical High School) was the first school in Japan to offer specialized education in crafts and design and opened in 1887 (Meiji 20) using part of the Ishikawa Kangyo Museum as a temporary school building. With Kanjiro Notomi as its first principal, the school developed a creative curriculum that combined traditional Japanese craftsmanship with Western design ideas to offer a wide variety of craft and design education. As a result, Ishikawa's crafts have developed to the point where it is now known as the "Kingdom of Crafts" and play a leading role in Japan's craft culture.

This exhibition aims to present the work, designs, books, and other materials produced by craft educators associated with Ishikawa Prefecture since the opening of the Kanazawa Institute of Technology, in order to provide visitors with an overview of the advanced craft and design education Ishikawa is proud of, as well as the educational philosophy and passion for craft culture held by the educators of each era. The purpose of the exhibition is to provide visitors with an understanding of the full range of advanced craft and design education in Ishikawa, the pride of the so-called Kingdom of Craft.
