The Heroes – Chronicles of the Warriors: Japanese Swords x Ukiyo-e from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston

Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Art
Finished
Heroes of valor, fluttering swords, and terrifying monsters. Samurai paintings depicting heroes from military tales and legends, such as the battle between Susanoo-no-Mikoto and Yamata-no-Orochi, the Genpei War, and the battle between Uesugi Kenshin and Takeda Shingen, have been produced by many ukiyo-e artists since the time of Hishikawa Shigenobu, who is called the founder of ukiyo-e. The images common to these warrior paintings are also used in sword mount designs.

This exhibition introduces 118 samurai paintings, 27 sword mounts with images common to those paintings, and 20 swords that are important elements of the heroes' exploits, carefully selected from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, which boasts one of the world's finest collections of Japanese art. In addition, in order to introduce the world of samurai paintings in a more accessible manner, swords and ukiyoe prints from domestic collections will be on special display.
