Artists

Mizumaru Anzai

The illustrator Mizumaru Anzai (1942-2014) worked in a variety of fields including novels, manga, picture books, essays, advertising, bookbinding, and translation. In his 20s, he worked for an advertising agency and learned the basics of design, then moved to the U.S., where he gained experience at a design firm in New York and met Kozaburo Arashiyama at the publishing company he would join after returning to Japan. While working in book and magazine design, he and Arashiyama laid the foundation for his later career as an illustrator. Anzai went independent at the age of 39, going on to collaborate with famous writers and artists such as Haruki Murakami and Makoto Wada. He spent the period from his childhood to just before graduation from junior high school in Sakura, Chiba Prefecture. He often spoke of his memories of Sakura as the “original landscape” behind his creative process. This exhibition introduces more than 500 of his drawings and other items, including work from his childhood through his later years and illustrations he drew for his solo exhibitions. This is the first retrospective of Anzai's work to be held in Chiba Prefecture and an opportunity to look back on his path as an artist associated with Chiba through a wealth of materials.
