Bashofu is a typical Okinawan textile made from natural fibers extracted from the basho plant, which is found mainly in the subtropical zone. Toshiko Taira is the woman who revived this traditional technique, which nearly disappeared after World War II, and brought it to the present day. For her achievements, she was designated an Important Intangible Cultural Property (Living National Treasure) in 2000. This exhibition will introduce the passion and handiwork of Toshiko Taira, who established a workshop in Kijoka to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Okinawa's reversion to mainland Japan.
