Wataru Yamakami, born in 1981 in Kochi and raised in Nagano, is a contemporary artist who has been presenting works based on the theme of "proliferation and transformation" and the connections that emerge through various means of expression, including painting, drawing, sculpture, and installation. He has attempted to depict a new way of being in the real world by connecting the macro and micro realms that cannot be visualized with people's daily lives.
In this exhibition, Yamakami will present a new large-scale installation on the theme of wind. Wind, which sometimes has the power to cause disasters while passing through the tiniest cracks, can be felt by everyone even though it cannot be directly seen, has been influencing people's lives since ancient times, flying freely without being bound by the boundaries set by man, carrying seeds and bacteria, causing waves in the sea, and knocking down houses and crops on land. Yamakami focuses not only on wind as a phenomenon, but also on the "wind direction of consciousness" created by people's lives and feelings, such as world affairs and life during the pandemic, as well as the "Kaze no Bon Festival," which is one of the origins of the wind-breaking festival and is representative of Toyama.
