M@M's 6th exhibition features the first collaboration between Kanjuro Kiritake, a puppeteer of the traditional Japanese puppet theater Bunraku, and Yasumasa Morimura, an artist.
Morimura has been presenting self-portrait works in which he has taken on the role of various famous paintings and historical figures. His subjects are young and old, male and female, East and West.
Kanjuro Kiritake, on the other hand, manipulates the hollow puppets as if they were human beings with blood flowing through their bodies. A Bunraku puppet begins to move as a single person only when the three puppeteers are in perfect harmony. It can be said that Kanjuro, the leader of the group, manipulates not only the puppets but also the people.
At first glance, the two performers, one in traditional performing arts and the other in contemporary art, seem to be worlds apart. By fate or destiny, they met in their respective bases in Osaka, and this exhibition marks their first time working together.
