Yoshiko Shimada "Ink Dance, Gold Leaf Song"

Fuji Gallery Shinjuku
Finished

Artists

Yoshiko Shimada
The first solo exhibition at Fuji Gallery Shinjuku for Yoshiko Shimada, a painter of fusuma-e (sliding door panels) who works with Japanese paper, sumi ink, and gold leaf. She paints nature motifs such as plum blossoms and plants, in addition to creating abstract paintings. In both types of work, the background has a sense of limitlessness characteristic of Japanese painting, while in the foreground shaded branches, flowers, and simple brushstrokes dance with gold leaf adding touches of color. Around 20 pieces from both series (mainly sets of four vividly depicting plum blossoms on foil) are on display and for sale.
