Yusuke Nakano is a contemporary artist who hunts through ancient and modern narratives from books, manga, and classical performing arts. He will present a new work conceived for the Shiranuhi Art Museum & Library from his “Paramodel” series of railroad toy installations. Nakano imagines that "a library is a model of the world, and the world is one huge book that will never be completed." He has researched literature and performing arts related to the Shiranuhi Sea and Kumamoto Prefecture, boldly interlacing images and huge drawings to transform the exhibition space. Nakano has studied the history of Kumamoto, learning about blind musicians known as "biwa-hoshi” who made a living by playing biwa lutes while traveling and telling stories about Shinto rituals.
Across the globe and throughout history, people have created art reflecting on the wounds they have sustained. The works of Michiko Ishimure confront the wounds of the city of Minamata, which suffered from mercury poisoning due to environmental pollution. Through the eyes of Nakano, with guidance from the narratives of Ishimure and the Higo Biwa lute, this exhibition will provide an opportunity to consider how the creative power of expression can confront harm caused to local areas.
