The Bologna Children's Book Fair, a trade fair specializing in children's books held every spring in Bologna, Italy, is one of the largest picture book illustration competitions in the world.
The competition judges a set of five illustrations drawn for a children's book, and entries are accepted regardless of whether or not the illustrator has experience in publishing. The competition is attracting attention as a gateway to success for illustrators and an opportunity to learn about the latest trends in children's books.
This year's competition received 3,873 entries from 92 countries, and 78 artists from 29 countries, including four Japanese, were selected. The Bologna Children's Book Fair Illustrators Exhibition, which introduces this wide variety of selected works, was first held in Japan in 1978, and this year marks the 25th time it has been held at the museum.
