Since 2014, Jan Russell and Yumi Goto have been teaching the Photobook as Object workshop, which was held in two phases at Reminders Photography Stronghold from September to October 2022, and in May, the results of the workshop were exhibited at RPS Kyoto Branch Paprol. In May, an exhibition of the workshop's results was held at the RPS Kyoto Branch Paprolle. During the exhibition, the participating artists will be present in the gallery while working on their dummy books, allowing visitors to experience the process of making a photo book.
In order to share with others a visual story centered on a complex and multifaceted event, the process of digging into the story line that brings the whole story to life from various angles and angles, and incorporating it into a book, is an enormous trial-and-error process. The time and effort that may at first glance seem like a roundabout way to go are essential in order to arrive at the "book you wanted to create/the book as a work of art with a sense of existence” not yet seen. The diversity of languages, cultures, and ways of thinking added depth to the discussions among the instructors and participants, and also gives the power to discover and improve elements that were lacking in the composition of the book.
At the end of the workshop, the participants had a few rough dummy books in their hands. The dummy books became the starting point for the workshop, and each participant continues to work on his or her own book, always asking themselves if they are getting closer to the book they "want to make and should make.” The exhibition venue will include the actual work of the artists.
