300 Years of Transportation on the Fujikawa River

Yamanashi Prefectural Museum
Finished
Opened for boat transportation by Ryoi Suminokura during the Keicho era mainly to transport tribute rice to Edo and Osaka, the Fujikawa River became a major artery of logistics supporting the livelihood of people in Kai and Shinano throughout the Edo period. Amidst significant political and social changes brought about by the Meiji Restoration, the Fujikawa River water transportation route became increasingly important, reaching its peak in the 1870s and 1880s, fostering cultural development through the movement of people and bringing diverse and large quantities of goods to inland areas. This exhibition introduces the history of the Fujikawa River water transportation from its emergence as a major logistics route in the early 17th century to its decline in the early 20th century, spanning approximately 300 years, through various materials.
