Rinzo Shiina
The year 2023 marks the 50th anniversary of the death of novelist Rinzo Shiina (1911-1973). Born in Himeji, Shiina ran away from home after leaving junior high school. He experienced a life of poverty while working at various jobs, and was imprisoned for participating in the labor movement. After the war, he attracted attention as a new writer based on existentialism and became a representative of the postwar school of literature.

In 1943, Shiina moved to Matsubara, Setagaya-ku, Tokyo, where he wrote many of his works, including his masterpiece "Eternal Preface," until his later years. This exhibition traces the life of Shiina Rinzo, who was constantly searching for "true freedom," with materials from the museum's collection.
