During the Meiji period (1868-1912), Japan introduced European culture in order to build a modern nation, and as part of this effort, Western-style clothing was introduced into the court dress. Western-style clothing, which was worn by the upper classes, gradually spread to wealthy urban areas in the Taisho and early Showa eras, and after World War II, as lifestyles changed, Western-style clothing took root in Japanese life. Since its foundation in 1923, Bunka Gakuen has played a central role in Japan's clothing education and has played a major role in the westernization of Japanese people and the development of human resources for fashion.
This exhibition will focus on the trend toward Western-style clothing from the Meiji period to the postwar period, and will also look back on Bunka Gakuen's 100-year history of clothing education.
