This exhibition traces the trajectory of Japanese and Western art in the 20th century through the collection of Western paintings and sculptures of the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, which has been a leader in the Japanese art world since its opening in 1952.
In Japan since the Meiji era (1868-1912), new forms of artistic expression have been pioneered along with the social changes brought about by modernization and Westernization. This exhibition will provide an overview of the Meiji period (1868-1912), a period of popularization of art, the Taisho period (1912-1926), a period of emphasis on individual expression, the pre-WWII Showa period (1926-1945), a time when freedom and oppression were at odds, and the postwar period, a time of increasing diversity in artistic expression. In addition, Western modern art, which is indispensable to the development of Japanese modern art, will also be introduced.
The path from modern art to contemporary art was a series of attempts to question existing styles and step out into unknown expressions. The path of transformation can be likened to an “adventure." The 76 works, including those from the collections of the Kumamoto Prefectural Museum of Art and the Takamatsu City Museum of Art (Kagawa Prefecture), will take viewers on an adventurous journey from modern art to contemporary art.
