Akiko Abe
Akiko Abe is a photographer based in Miura, originally from Miyagi Prefecture.

This exhibition introduces a series of photographs created by Abe during the early stages of her photographic career. These works were produced using a machine called a "typesetting machine" or "phototypesetter." Before the widespread use of personal computers, phototypesetters were employed as a new printing technology, replacing letterpress printing.

These works apply the method of "composing characters using the principles of optical photography." Instead of the character dial typically placed on the phototypesetter's platform, the subject is placed, and by adjusting the angle and duration of exposure, it directly sensitizes photosensitive paper (or film), resulting in images with very high density and resolution.
