Alfons Mucha "Goddesses of the Belle Epoque"

Takasaki Museum of Art
Finished

Artists

Alfons Mucha
Czech native Alphonse Mucha (1860-1939) studied painting while working as an illustrator, and moved to Paris in 1887. The posters caused a sensation, and Mucha became the darling of Art Nouveau. Mucha's images of glamorous women combined with swirling botanical patterns quickly swept across Europe and the United States. The period from the end of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century, when Paris enjoyed a brief period of peace and glamorous urban culture, is known as the "Belle Époque" (Beautiful Age). The women depicted by Mucha were the goddesses of the Belle Époque.

This exhibition features approximately 300 works from the collection of Hisayuki Ogata, a world-renowned collector of Mucha's works, including posters and decorative panels depicting elegant female figures, as well as industrial designs such as confectionery containers and perfume bottles.
