Tamiji Kitagawa (1894-1989) was born in Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan. After dropping out of Waseda University's School of Commerce, he moved to the United States in 1914 at the age of 20. In 1921, he moved to Mexico, where he devoted himself to children's art education at Tlalpam in the suburbs of Mexico City and at an outdoor art school in Tasco and also worked on his own paintings. He returned to Japan in 1936 and exhibited works featuring Mexican people and customs at the Nika Exhibition the following year, where he was nominated for membership. During the war, he evacuated to Seto City, where his wife's family lived, and thereafter set up a studio in Seto City, where he actively produced works featuring Seto landscapes and potters, etc. In 1978, he was appointed president of the Nika-kai, and became a devoted educator and a leading Western-style painter in Japan, leading the Japanese painting world.
The museum has collected works by Tamiji Kitagawa as one of its main collections and holds regular exhibitions of his works. 30 years after his death, the "Citizens' Favorite Tamiji Kitagawa" exhibition held in 2019 was an attempt to collect and exhibit works by Tamiji Kitagawa from citizens, and we received many submissions from them, showing that Tamiji Kitagawa was truly loved by the citizens of Seto City. The exhibition was an attempt to collect and exhibit works by Tamiji Kitagawa from the citizens of Seto City. In addition, many people donated their works to the exhibition.
