Amalia Ulman + Raiki Yamamoto "Hot City People"

Hysteric Glamour Shibuya
Finished

Artists

Amalia Ulman, Raiki Yamamoto
This dual exhibition brings together newly commissioned works by Ulman and Yamamoto into a superfluous exchange/dialogue. Amalia lives and works in New York, and her work is often characterized by its subversive and humorous approach to contemporary culture and urban life. Her multidisciplinary practice offers thought-provoking commentary on how contemporary culture and media shape our world, inviting viewers to reflect on their relationships with such powerful sources. Raiki’s practice oscillates between intensely personal and contemporary culture, incorporating elements from her life as a high school student in Tokyo alongside found online imagery. Through this Raiki blurs the boundaries between the self-image and the presented image, questioning the multifaceted capabilities of perception.

Both artists play with their self-image, one constantly being renewed within the media, mirroring the big metropolitan cities they live in -New York and Tokyo. Both cities are on the verge of a cultural melt-down, from their constant vortex of representation. There is a mutual understanding of one's own value within such Hot Cities whilst also humorously questioning how to live glamorously in such a city.

The work and worlds of Ulman and Yamamoto reflect the ethos of Hysteric Glamour, a brand that has been popular since the 90s by Nobuhiko Kitamura, encapsulated in their tongue-in-cheek playful presentation of female silhouettes in media.
